How we came to be kept late

It began on a borrowed terrace in late autumn — two strangers left at the dregs of a dinner that refused to end. One poured the last of the wine; the other would not let the evening close. Seven Octobers later, we are still at that table, and we should very much like you at it too.

“We are not throwing a party. We are laying a table — and asking you to stay until the candles burn low.”

Aswarby Rectory is an 1820 house set in nine acres of garden and old parkland, given over to us alone for the weekend. We chose it for the Lebanon cedars, the candlelit rooms, and an evening with no good reason to end. Come dressed for the season, and come willing to be kept late.

The particulars

What to wear

Dress Code

Formal evening wear, with the garden in mind. Oxblood, ink, moss and midnight. Leave the whites and ivories to the bride.

Getting there

Travel

The Rectory sits just off the A15, in the estate village of Aswarby. Sleaford is fifteen minutes north; Grantham, with its fast train from London, half an hour west. NG34 8SB for the sat-nav.

Where to rest

Staying Over

The eight rooms in the house are kept for family. For everyone else, the villages nearby hold a fine store of cottages, barns and inns; our list is just below.

The guest list

A Grown-Ups’ Evening

An adults-only evening. We’d love you at the table with nothing to mind but the next glass and the next dance.

The drive

Aswarby sits just off the A15, ten minutes south of Sleaford. Set the sat-nav to NG34 8SB and follow the estate wall to the house; there is parking in the grounds.

By rail

The train

From London, the fast train runs from King’s Cross to Grantham in about an hour, with a taxi to cover the last twenty-five minutes. Sleaford station is nearer, but on a slower line; it suits regional journeys better than the run from town.

By taxi

Book ahead

There is no Uber in this corner of Lincolnshire, and late cars are scarce. Do book your journey home in advance: Hoot’s Taxis or Ian’s Taxis in Sleaford, Silver Cabs in Grantham.

Where to stay

The rooms at the house itself are spoken for. Happily, the villages around Aswarby keep a fine store of cottages, barns and inns, gathered below with the venue’s blessing. September beds in Lincolnshire are few, so do book early. And if you are staying at the Rectory, we will tell you so ourselves; you need only find a bed for the night before.

The finer points

We are so glad you are coming, and we want the evening to feel easy from the first glass until the last dance. To that end, a few gentle notes, offered with love.

The guest list

Grown-ups only

Ours is an adults-only evening, without exception. We hope a rare night off duty feels less like a rule and more like a gift.

Plus ones

Named places

Every place at our table has been laid for someone particular. If your invitation names a guest, we cannot wait to meet them; if it does not, we hope you will forgive us a table kept small and dear.

What to wear

Formal evening wear

Dress up, and gladly: your very best for a candlelit garden, formal rather than summer dress. We ask only that you leave the tuxedos at home, and the whites, ivories, creams and lace to the bride.

Arrival

In good time

Please be with us comfortably before two o’clock. Once the ceremony begins, the garden closes until the vows are made, and we would hate for you to miss them.

The ceremony

Phones off, eyes up

For the ceremony itself we ask that every phone and device be switched off. Our photographers will catch each moment beautifully, and we would far rather see your faces than your screens. For the rest of the day, photograph away with our blessing.

Social media

Let us go first

We would love to be the first to share photographs of ourselves as newly-weds, so please hold yours back until we have. Pictures of your own good selves, though, we encourage without reservation.

Announcements

One toast at a time

If you are carrying wonderful news of your own, we ask that it keep for another day. We promise to raise a glass to it properly when the moment is yours.

The pool

Strictly ornamental

The house keeps a swimming pool, but between the season and the champagne it stays firmly off limits. Please admire it from dry land.
